one thing that I've always found fishy about charts pre-1990s is that sometimes literally 1-4 weeks after a song is released it manages to have a lofty début it's too unrealistic.

I guess this is why soundscan was made so the charts wouldn't look so artificial

i don't get it. songs debut in the top 10 all the time nowadays, actually more often than they used to.

and it's not impossible for songs to pick up steam quickly, especially when they're either by major artists or are just BIG hits (like i will always love you)

I mean idk about mariah but I have one great example:

culture club - do you really want to hurt me (I'll be talking about the UK charts, not the USA ones)

it came out on 6 sep 1982, was nowhere for the chart that tracked that week, then randomly showed up on the chart for the following week at 66, following bad press

then it managed to vault at 38, then 15… went on to be #1 some wks later

like I honestly find it to be unrealistic, their last two singles flopped and they released DYRWTHM as a "hope this doesn't flop or else we're DONE" single it's almost too convenient how it managed to hit top 15 in such a short time, right after them coming off of bad press and two flop singles
