But ARTPOP didn't even go platinum, d. Hardly an album artist.

Unless PI really picks up on radio (or the second single is a surprise smash), I'll be pleasantly surprised if Joanne scrapes gold. If the Super Bowl rumors are true, maybe that could turn things around, but she'll already be on a third single by then.

I don't know why anyone is surprised though. I love PI, but I knew from the first listen that it sounded like a flop. Y'all thought she was "winning back the GP" etc since G2G. She was rehabbing her image, sure, but she was also making lots of monsters move on (the ones who don't care for jazz standards or award show tributes or AHS). The GP only care for catchy songs they hear on the radio; they don't care if Gaga won a Golden Globe.

Maybe someday she'll have another big smash, but frankly I don't think she cares anymore. It's very refreshing. If this were the ARTPOP era, she'd be having a meltdown over #41 on iTunes.
