The lukewarm reception to the single has kind of been irritating to me.

I Think the problem is the delivery moreso the lyrics, the transition from verse to chorus is jarred and she sounds out of breath by the second verse. As if it were a live mic feed vs a studio recording. She's not some underground act that cant afford to finess these things

The worst part of the song is definitely the vocals in the choruses. Especially come key change.

I think that's the sound she was going for. She wants you to hear her voice exactly as it is. Her whole aesthetic/approach this era so far seems intentionally unpolished, which I love but understand why others wouldnt.
Perfect Illusion is such a disaster. The strained, unpleasant vocals of ARTPOP, production that sounds like a rejected BTW demo, a boring, repetitive melody that terrible middle 8, the way the last 59% of the song is just her saying one line over and over

"Intentionally unpolished" doesnt excuse her from criticism for being sloppy. I dont think the song is bad but its such an exhausting listen for a 3 minute song she can work a gritty pop song better than this, and we should expect better from her
Katy is talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, **** on it, ***** on it, eat it, give birth to it.
