I mean Katy released a single that was promoted everywhere including the RNC convention and the Olympics yet it barely did over 130k, another example is Britney that did every promo spot there is for a lead that had a collaboration with one of the year's hit rappers and couldn't even touch 100k

for an artist that was away from the pop scene for over 3 years to come back with a song that is so different from the usual pop radio friendly format and possibly do 100k first week in the current state of digital sales it's not an easy thing to do

You could literally perform at the SB 5 years in a row and come up with something like Perfect Illusion and you still won't smash.

Katy came after a massive era and a SB performance and yet only pulled 137k because the song didn't stick with the public.

It's all about the song, nothing more or less than that.

If she would have made a comeback with a song like Closer (which thankfully didn't happen), she wouldn't be in the case she is now.

Promoted everywhere. NBC pretty much blacklisted it after she performed it at the RNC & Spotify sabotaged it from day 1, then radio pretty much completely dropped it after the olympics ended. It never had a chance. And it done 137k, closer to 140k than 130k.
