I don't want to be negative, but now with the low sales climate it's much easier to go #1 and make impressive leads. Still, PI had an amazing start, but I wasn't expecting nothing less from her fanbase.

What blocked Applause in the UK? I'm sure it wasn't Roar because it got a delayed release there. Was it Blurred Lines?

I think the labels are taking chances. When there is a major release there is more exposure, and the effeciency of the discount will maximise.
