If anything, "Applause" is proof that the lyrics of the song won't necessarily be what holds it back on radio. After all, just look at this year: "Panda" was a #1 hit
What can hold it back are unappealing instrumental production, unappetizing vocal delivery, and lack of a melody - all of which were characteristics shared by both "Marry The Night" and "G.U.Y." (remember that just because you like the production/vocals on those songs doesn't mean that radio audiences at large will).
