I wouldn't bee two quick to discredit him. I think the reason behind the song's success is the lyric "any girl like deserves a gentleman." See, being the musical and lyrical genius that Shawn Mendes is, he sings it in a particular tonal way where the lyric could also sound like he is saying "any GUY like you deserves a gentleman" thus creating a song that resonates with different segments of the general population.

Millennials are very driven to progressive values and Shawn's subtle queer-progressive song is speaking to the core of their values.

I was surprised to see the mixed reception for this one... and then I wasn't.

This is the probably purest attempt Britney has made to harness some of that ineffable charm that made her early work so irresistible. I adore it.
