The incident you're referring to happened to a Japanese idol.
But to answer your question, sometimes it doesn't matter. What these companies are really looking for (in addition to music success of course) are for corporations to take notice of these idols and sign them for endorsements or acting gigs. There are some flop groups that are kept afloat by one or two members that are well known outside of music.
When that can't happen, I guess they just disband. There was one group that had to crowdfund their latest album in a last ditch effort to hit it big but they tanked and now they're over
