I was looking at the Hot 100 from the early 2000s and the amount of black women getting hits was astounding compared to now. Aaliyah, Macy Gray, Ashanti, Destiny's Child, Mary J. Blige, Janet, Mya, Blue Cantrell, Lil Kim, Eve all popular, relevant, successful. Nowadays it's literally Beyonce, Rihanna, Nicki, and everyone else is a struggle.

And it's not like they're just not crossing over to pop while enjoying big careers in the urban world, urban radio is almost exclusively male and no one buys their albums.
