I remember always reading that Dangerous was certified 7x platinum and its SoundScan sales are about 5.8 million. It's my favorite album of his so I wish it had seen more US success. But like you said, it was massive globally. It was also the subject of a great 33 and 1/3 book that I recommend to anyone who loves the album!

They really should have 25th anniversary plans for Dangerous. His work beyond the 1980s gets such short shrift in the press when it's really some of his most fascinating stuff.

I wish somehow back then the music industry would have tracked EXACT sales because it could tell us exactly which album sold how many units.

I see lots of fans on these site claiming this pop star has sold this amount of albums and that pop star sold this amount. The numbers keep on changing and then you figure out who is the most trustworthy.

I think i'm gonna get this one next. I got the Man In The Music book by Joseph Vogel for Christmas and I love it.

Also I don't worry much about the critics. Never have never will. From what i've seen the GP uses his 90s discography just as much as the 80s. I mean They Don't Care About Us isn't his second most viewed video other than Thriller for nothing.

Oh! Man In the Music! An incredible book. I've bought a few Michael books in the last year, including Michael Jackson, Inc., which I enjoyed a lot. The Genius of Michael Jackson also had some interesting bits.

I'm a big fan of biographies, so I'm still holding out for the definitive thousand-paged book that cuts through all the ******** and just presents us a well-written, in-depth story of his life and career that's rooted in fact and declines to pass judgment.

At the point Bad needs to be certified diamond and Number Ones needs to be certified 5x platinum.

Off the Wall may need to be bumped up to 9x platinum but I don't know it's starting point other than it was just 8x platinum.

Also don't forget to view his videos everyone! Trying to get that 100m viewed record!

Some people at MJJC were saying Sony are targeting Q4 for the final posthumous album under the current record deal. I hope they release the way they did XSCAPE, where they have the original versions too

I never listened to the remixes tbh. And the orginals were not my favorites. If this is true I hope they take unreleased songs from the Thriller, Bad, and Dangerous eras. And maybe Off The Wall if they have any.

The are owed one more posthumous full release, like Michael and XSCAPE.

After that, I can see a Dangerous30 release (they've missed Dangerous 25 unless they're going to rush release it this year) but not much else in the way of demo releases for specific catalog albums. OTW would have had its release with the documentary this year and HIStory is a two-disc record that doesn't seem likely to get a stand alone re-release.

My only problem with Xscape is that I had all but one of the songs already...

Do any MJ fans on here listen to his work with The Jacksons, his period after the Jackson 5 but before Off The Wall? It's just so underrated and i've never seen anyone talk about them on here. If you've never heard of these you ABSOLUTELY MUST listen to them, especially if your favorite MJ albums are Off The Wall and Thriller.

Both Sony and the MJ Estate need to pay for the updates. They updated Thriller ASAP once the streaming rules went into effect for album certs. I wonder if one or both records are close to a further cert and so they're waiting because it's cheaper to update ones, e.g. Bad is eligible for Diamond from album sales/shipments alone, but maybe close to 12X of they include the new rules for streaming so they're waiting.

Biggest issue with OTW and Bad are total album sales. Nobody publically knows them... estimates put both albums well ahead of their certs, especially Bad.

Thanks to Thriller's update, Michael is now the 7th best-selling albums artist in the USA based on certs (he's actually 6th but needs updates). He has 79M certified album sales as per RIAA. Above him is Billy Joel at 82.5M (Michael is 100% above this) and then the top 5 are:

The Beatles - 178M
Garth Brooks - 137M
Elvis Presley - 136M
Led Zeppelin - 111M
The Eagles - 101M***

***Eagles bought millions more certs than they've sold.

Michael's 79M is missing tracked increases of:
+1 or +2 X Plat from Number Ones [Currently 4 X Plat with 5.3M+ in sales; eligible for 5X immediately, 6X soon]
+ 1 X Plat from Bad [Currently 9 X Plat from sales, easily 10X without any streaming inclusions]
+ 1 X Plat from Off The Wall [Currently 8 X Plat from sales, 9 X Plat with current shipments easily]

Certs I presume need updating:

HIStory: currently 7X Mult-plat from sales, not updated since 1999... guessing ready for 8X Plat as it only has to move another 500K as a two-disc set to get a Plat update.

The Essential MJ: currently 3X Multi-plat from sales, this accounts of 1.5M in sales of the 2-disc set but it sold more than this since MJ died alone. At least 1 X Plat more needs to be added, possibly 2X.

That would put Michael at ~84M in certified US album sales.

I haven't seen its SoundScan updated in literally years. It sold about 300-350K in 2009 in the US according to users at MJJC, but its cert for shipments are from 1999. I put it down as a maybe update, I really don't know how it's doing in the US.

MJDangerous estimated its sales at over 6M (so over 3M in actual set sales) in 2009... if its sold another 100-150K since then it could be on the precipice of moving enough to update.
