I think Kate is fantastic and better than Janet musically.

But, why can Kate be called a legend for her impact & influence while not seeing much success (especially outside of her home country), but Janet gets denied that because "local"? You don't have to compare the quality of their musical output to see Janet has loads of both of those things as well. She's not a musical genius, no, but she is legendary. I wouldn't exactly call Little Richard a genius, but he's a legend, no?

But anyways, some of the people upset over Jan here say people like Aretha & Joni aren't legends, either.

Kate is amazing but like many things you can't really point to one person and say they are responsible for everyone that followed. (I know my fellow Jan clan members are very guilty of this.) Janet was one of the biggest American icons to consistently use a head mic from the Control era onward, and she is one of a handful of people who you could say created the blueprint for the headset/midriff bubblegum pop era.

I'm not denying Janet's status as a showbiz "legend", whatever that even means. Everything about the way we listen to music and perceive celebrity is entirely subjective - if someone from Whereverland doesn't know who Janet Jackson is, I'm not going to sit on ATRL and spend hours explaining who she is and why she's important and why they should consider her a "legend".

I wouldn't expect anyone who isn't Irish to know who Ronnie Drew is - does that mean he's not considered a "legend" here? No. Does that mean I expect someone from Africa to consider him a "legend"? No. I don't care. It's totally arbitrary and depends on your cultural background, upbringing, and own interests.

ATRL's fixation with completely pointless crap like this is fun for trolling, which I've embraced wholeheartedly at times, but when you spend twenty pages debating the cultural importance/artistic merits of someone like Janet Jackson, who made four good pop records and a few interesting music videos ("in my opinion", for the slow ones in the back) it's gone a bit too far.

I'm white lol. It's not racist that people don't care. It seems racist to knock down Janet's achievements / influence when a lot of the same people would probably turn around and say Kylie had more influence, just because white Europeans know her as opposed to the black Americans who love Janet. It's the people who say "I don't know her, she must be forgotten," as if the millions of people who do know and love Janet don't matter at all.
