Higher education in Germany is free and the pay and benefits after graduation are good.
The real problem in our country is the fact that people live on borrowed money (student loans, excessive credit card debt, leased cars that they replace every two or three years, refinancing and taking out second mortgages, etc). The salary that many people earn goes to cover secured and unsecured debt. It is all part of a "healthy" consumerist and capitalist economy. And yes, while some of these issues also exist in Western and Central Europe the problem is not as acute as it is in the U.S.
