I think he just got lucky in the (R) primary. He was so ruthless and efficient in disposing of his rivals back then, but as soon as that ended he's become such a weak GE candidate its almost comical.

His supporters legitimately think he's this tough warrior. He's easily the most thin-skinned public figure of all time. He can't NOT respond whenever someone says something bad about him.
He was fortunate that the GOP primary was a clown show...he would not have been able to win had he faced only 2 or 3 opponents rather than 13. But Republicans always come home eventually so the GE will be competitive as usual, at least from a popular vote standpoint.
