After the release of Rio 2016's Olympic anthem "Rise", Katy Perry releases her new single "Tonight" on August 28th immediately following her surprise VMAs performance of the single after deceiving the audience into a performance of "Rise" which was really just the first verse and pre-chorus. "Tonight" goes up with Katy Perry's fourth studio album pre-order, simply entitled ⚡, available October 14th. Although teasers proceeded the VMAs displaying "Tonight. VMAs." no one linked them to Katy Perry for 100% certainty. The majority thought the teasers were for the VMAs themselves only as these teasers only aired the day of the VMAs.
The song made a number #1 debut on the Billboard 100 its first week with 337K sales and became the fastest ever #1 on iTunes in the US in just 17 minutes.
