I don't see this happening. The RNC has became a mockery with a different scandal happening every day. Cruz refusing to endorse on national television probably the most damning since it hasn't happened since the 70s. Not to mention the pull to full on social conservatism likening back to the Third Reich, people even using the Seig Heil. I don't think anyone "moderate" or "independent" can see this in any other way except as a total and utter failure of party unity.
