It's all a change in mindset. Back in the 19th-C and early 20th-C everything (like, literally) was blamed on alcohol. Prohibition, at least in the U.S., came and and went; alcohol was missed and legalized again and no one ever looked back at the supposed demon that it represented. Marihuana replaced it (along with LSD, cocaine, meth, and every other drug that has come along).
And now we are at a point where weed is pretty much looked upon as just a different kind of ciggy. Who knows where we will go from here.
