Hey y'all, I figured I'd take the time to address some of your comments and concerns from the survey. I really appreciate y'all partaking in it!
What is your biggest complaint about PH9 thus far?

There's been a lot of challenges where you have to take on a different style of writing to meet the criteria of a challenge, which doesn't help much with building upon a personal style, in my opinion.

I can agree with this somewhat. The challenges have limited y'all to either in style but mostly content, but I don't think it's been to an extent that's much different from prior seasons. The challenges from here on out really aren't as restrictive, however, except for maybe next round.

There have been three restrictive challenges essentially: Writing Camp, Sequel, and Self-Portrait, maybe Soundtrack. But even then, there were plenty of options for the Sequel challenge - any song ever - and a good number for the Soundtrack. The Writing Camp was definitely limited, mostly due to the panel having four judges as opposed to five, and if I were to do the Self-Portrait Challenge again, I would've had y'all sign up for the restrictions we created. Again, there's MAYBE one more restrictive challenge.

I'm not sure what you mean by judging being too strict. Literally every single contestant left has gotten multiple 8s from judges throughout the season, and everyone has had a song with a 7+ average. We have high standards, and we like to see you rise to them. I agree with the last comment, however, and it's been something that I've been trying to stray away from in recent weeks, and I'll often think "How would I judge this if it were a different contestant?" in terms of scores, but not feedback.

Well, this isn't anything new. This is how art works in the real world as well. Some will love it, some won't. I only think it gets problematic when we interpret the challenges differently.
When we give y'all advice on what to do for the next week, it's what we think would work best for you. It's up to you to decide what will actually work.

But these are actual problems. I don't think a single judge in PH history has been one to NOT hop on those issues, and the best writers are the ones that avoid them.

Yeah, I'm not necessarilly a fan of it, which is why if it happens with me I try to handle it outside of the thread so it's not everyone's business, but the judges are their own people and it will be up to them to decide on the best course of action for those issues.
What advice and ideas do you have for the rest of PH9?

I think the writers should keep their writing style while they should be encouraged to step out of their comfort zone it shouldn't always be a necessity. If course if their entries are repetitives then let us know. Also, we shouldn't be dragged for "simple" lyrics but when we try to bump up the imagery we're dragged for that too. Kinda hard to find a happy medium.

I agree with the first half or so, I'll take that into consideration.
And it is hard to find a happy medium, but there is one, and we're going to keep pushing you to find it. I used this metaphor a while back, but when you're trying to tune your instrument, you can be flat (below the pitch) and sharp (above the pitch). There's an area in the middle that you're trying to hit, but it's pretty common when you're flat to overcompensate and go sharp and vice-versa. The longer you tune however, the closer you'll to being in tune (generally).

For my first response, it would be nice to get guides on "Poeticism vs. Realism". That's my biggest struggle.
For my second response, It would be nice to have a challenge that said "no rhyme scheme whatsoever" or "only four-letter (or less) words" or "no chorus" challenges! That would give us freedom to write whatever we want, but also gives us a stylistic restriction…

So i've wrote like 3 songs, I don't know which to send. But one of them is a pop-rap song, and I've never wrote a rap before.
So I'm thinking about sending that just because it's new for me and I don't wanna keep repeating myself.
Are rap parts usually tossed aside or would the judges like to see some of that?
