They can generally keep their **** airtight w/o heavy label intervention. It's popstars like Gaga, Britney, Rihanna, and Miley who have potential, but need constant grooming to stay competitive. That's where an American analogue to those Korean camps would come in handy.

She was never 'directed on what she needed to do'. She was just trying to make it. Once she did, she started having original ideas and pushing the boundaries and manufacturing herself into something the world had never seen before (TFM/Born This Way).
The problem for her arose when she actually was listening to fans and her manager more on what her direction should be, musically, visually and in terms of business moves and collaborations (2012 and ARTPOP) because it clearly caused a lot of mental health problems for her. It may be her best album in my opinion, but it was a mess of a time.

It's still not the same. Manufacturing yourself is genuine. That shows. That shines through, people recognize your hard work. Being manufactured by something or someone else is not.

Gaga was manufactured from day one through ARTPOP to approximately the same extent, with the possible exception of the BTW era. As was noted above, her worst moments with ARTPOP came when her label was trying to pressure her to be something and work in a certain way, and it ended up sucking majorly as an era.
