Honestly though, the music origin part of this is sorta unnecessary and not that big of a deal. The music is fine as long as it's not done distastefully or offensively. He seems to genuinely love R&B music + his is horrible anyway so whatever. The way he responded is the true problem.... for me at least.
This. Saying anyone who isn't black shouldn't be doing any R&B or Soul influences in their music and can't be inspired by it is just silly. Especially when he's never done in it an offensive way, or looked to be exploiting it just for success. He actually likes Urban music, and he was watching the BET Awards because of it.
Him playing the 'all of us are the same' card was problematic, he got dragged for it rightfully, and that's that. I think bringing up Janet or accusing him of exploiting black culture with his music is just extra lol, and I don't even like him like that as a person.
That was actually sweet of him. I agree with the concept of us being all the same; not in life experience, culture, or race, but in the general sense of being human and having love for anyone regardless of where they come from and what they look like.

! I don't like him much either and definitely think he should have been more supportive of Janet but that's another situation in itself. I edited my earlier post to say the same thing. That person was definitely being one of those and being annoying. His initial response just ****ed it all up. Sorta happy he got a bit of lashing tho hehe but people are straying now w/ the whole music thing. In this case, it's just not that deep

Justins career was built on him being the urban white boy. Its been like that since Justified, since the cornrows, hell since he was on the Mickey Mouse Club doing Jodeci covers acting like he was Devante.
His career was built on the influence of black music and culture. And with that in mind he needs to at the very ****ing least be respectful of the culture and not **** on it and its leader when he feels like it.

Idk why people always get their panties in a twist about "stealing our culture!!" Not a SINGLE culture, past or present would exist they way it did/does without "taking" from others. Whether it be music, language, religion, food, dance, expressions, clothing, etc. Cultural exchange, or "appropriation" () has always happened and will continue to happen.

Britney started out with hip hop influences though and she would wear baggy clothes too. JT did pure pop, and didnt Beyonce do pop in 2009? It just depends what's in. Right now 70s songs are in. If the internet wasnt here no one would say anything, but since JT didn't start with the 70s sound I'd say he's at fault and should apologize for it. It's not his sound.
