Obama stands by ‘back of queue’ warning on post-Brexit UK trade deal

President Obama has stood by his comment that Britain will move to the back of the queue post-Brexit when it comes to trade deals with the United States.

The president urged the UK to remain in the EU when he visited London in April and warned that a trade agreement between the two countries would not happen anytime soon if Britain left the bloc.

“Obviously, the president stands by what he said and I don’t have an update of our position,” White House spokesman Eric Schultz said on Friday.

The divorce between the UK and the EU could sink hopes of a massive US-EU free trade deal before Obama leaves office next January.

Growing anti-trade sentiment and other factors mean negotiations on the so-called TTIP deal have already stalled.

Obama said on Friday the EU would remain one of America’s “indispensable partners” – and the US’s “special relationship” with Britain would continue.

Theresa didn't do much for Remain (in fact she was pretty damn unhelpful) and she's been a great Home Secretary (from an operational perspective anyway) and I'm happy people seem to be rallying around her as the anti-Boris choice.

In a leaked draft resolution, to be considered by MEPs at an emergency sitting of the European Parliament on Tuesday, the European Parliament will call on British Prime Minister David Cameron to formally notify the European Council of the referendum outcome at an EU summit next Tuesday and Wednesday.

The draft text says: “This notification will launch the withdrawal procedure, to prevent damaging uncertainty for everyone and in order to protect the Union’s integrity.”

The resolution, which is being prepared by the four main groups in the European Parliament, also calls for the duties of Britain’s EU Commissioner Jonathan Hill to be reallocated immediately, and for the order of the rotating presidency of the EU to be changed.

The UK’s most senior diplomat in Brussels, Jonathan Hill, is resigning following Britain’s vote to leave the European Union, as “what is done cannot be undone”.

Lord Hill, the UK’s European commissioner, was sent to Brussels by David Cameron and took the highly prized portfolio of financial services. But his departure from a big EU finance job became a foregone conclusion after Brexit, because many European politicians opposed having a Briton in charge of financial services, when the UK is on its way out.
