What do you (the contestants), a monkey, an elephant and a rhinoceros all have in common? Camp!
CHALLENGE #5
THE WRITING CAMP CHALLENGE

In the music industry, record labels usually enlist a lot of songwriters to work on the same project and contribute songs that fit the sound the artist is going for. This week, we're giving you a real industry experience by giving you the chance to be hired by a record label in order to contribute to their artist's album!
776 Records
CEO: Temporal
Artist: King Glade
Genre: Indie-Pop, Synth-Pop, Electropop
Quote:
King Glade is an American solo artist, who has been bubbling under in the Indie for about a year. He's released an EP independently, "High Tyde" to nearly a million streams cumulatively. His contract with 776 Records is his first major label deal, and the label is looking to break him into the newly changing Top 40 scene.
That doesn't mean that the label is looking for "We're gonna stay up all night / Rock until the morning light / Everything will be alright" for example, they're looking for lyrics that will appeal to his Indie fan base but also be digestible enough that the typical Top 40 crowd can resonate to it. They're looking for fresh lyrics, nuanced language, and original, conceptualized themes, that won't go entirely over radio listener's heads.
Glade's musical inspirations and influences include the 1975, Ellie Goulding (Halcyon and Lights), Paramore, Sky Ferriera, and Troye Sivan.

Railroad Records
CEO: Jackson
Artist: Forrest Bird
Genres: Outlaw Country, Americana
Quote:
Fresh off his #1 smash hit Crystallize last year, Forrest is beginning the writing sessions for his second solo album. He doesn't want to be seen as a one trick pony, and as such is changing up his sound this time around. Audiences may see him as too "soft" after his emotionally vulnerable #1 hit, so he's aiming towards an outlaw country theme for his second album.
Due to his rising status in the music industry, he wants a song he can perform in front of arenas on tour and get people singing along. Still, he wants to keep the rootsy Americana feel of his first album. Possible themes could include the American West, roadtrips, travelling, nature, cowboys, robbery, or being the bad guy in town. Conversely, he's also looking for a slow, smoky midtempo to mature his image and woo his female audience.
Just like the last time around, he's looking for acclaim over a #1 hit, and he hates cliches. This record is inspired by country and rock greats of the past.

Horlianthus Records
CEO: Hor
Artist: HRJR
Genres: Pop. Rock, Folk, Dance
Quote:
HRJR has found both commercial and critical success with his self-titled debut. Now he wants to expand on his sound for his sophomore release. He likes for his sound to reflect his lyrics, which he prioritizes. His influences include pop musicians such as Taylor Swift, David Bowie, and Madonna mixing rock and pop sounds as well as Mexican folk.
At this stage in his career, he aims for a timeless sound grounded on pop and its many faces. While most of his productions contain organic elements, he likes to experiment with and incorporate electronic sounds within his compositions. Many have compared his songwriting style as a mix between Joni Mitchell-lite and the star-man himself, David Bowie. He focuses mainly on storytelling and is noted for making personal stories universal. Although most of his work is based on personal experiences, he likes to experiment with his concepts.
Below is an example of one of the finished tracks on his album in order for you to imagine the sound:

Saga Entertainment Records
CEO: 8thPrince
Artist: John Doe
Genre(s): Pop, Electronic, Noise, Avant Garde, Ethereal Wave
Quote:
From: Saga Entertainment A&R
To: Platinum Hit A&R
Cc: none
Subject: Saga Entertainment is currently soliciting demos for act John Doe’s first album
Background:
John Doe are an American five-piece boy band, composed of members Armando, Brian, Canon, Dallas, and Eugene. The pop ensemble was heavily hyped upon the release of their debut EP last year, with many proposing that they would be rivals to the successful boy band United Course. Marketed with a clean-cut, boy next door image, their pop-rock leaning single “Baby, I Love You” was met with a surprising commercial failure, with critics lambasting the generic nature of the single.
Taking a huge risk, Saga Entertainment followed-up the single with another song from the EP, a noise-influenced pop/electronica track named “Fresh Meat”, which criticized Hollywood’s exploitative ways. Packaged with a darker image for the boys in a horror/thriller concept, the single was met with moderate commercial success and widespread critical acclaim. While maintaining their previous demographic of young girls, the risk had an unexpected side effect in attracting an older audience more evenly split between males and females.
Brief:
This unexpected success has caused Saga Entertainment to further drive John Doe in their new direction. We’re looking for music that’s slightly darker, creepier, cooler, and edgier, satisfying John Doe’s older audiences without alienating their younger one. Funky metaphors are encouraged: relating love to wisdom teeth and referencing urban legends and superstitious lore are par the course for the group.
Structurally, John Doe is a unique group in that all members have a role and get time in the spotlight in each song. Due to their disparate vocal capabilities, any combination of singing, rapping, talking, chanting, interjections, adlibs, and spoken parts can be observed in a given John Doe track. Songs that allow some interplay between the members and take advantage of the multiple vocalists are encouraged!
In regards to song types were looking for, for uptempos, we want weird, creative, and fun songs. The album needs some dynamics as well, so slower songs expressing ethereal and/or haunting vibes may be in even higher demand. All songs should stand out and leave a long-lasting impression.
Please submit all demos to our Temp.
Regards,
8thPrince, A&R Head of Saga Entertainment

There are sign-ups for this round. Please read each label description and find the one that suits you best. There are 6 sign ups for each label, so there should be plenty of wiggle room for 18 contestants.
After signing up, you'll have to write a full-length song based on the description of the sound and the vibe the artist of your label of choice is going for!
Your song will be evaluated by all 4 judges and all 4 scores will matter for your average. But at the end of the week, each CEO will announce whether your song will appear on the artist's album or not (in other words, whether you were hired or not!). There's no specific number for how many songwriters the CEO can hire. They can hire everyone that applied or no one at all. You'll get a bonus if you're hired but no points will be deducted if you're not!!
