Didn't 25 sell more in 3 months than 1989 did in its entire run? Not saying that's an excuse, because Taylor's album indeed had more pop smashes on it, but it's something worth considering.
The break between Hello and SML damaged the era's momentum since WWWY died so quickly on pop. It's hard to recover on that format once the momentum is damaged/stalled. Taylor kept her momentum going the entire era up until the Grammys and promoted relentlessly the entire run. Adele just doesn't do that. She goes all out until album release then basically stops giving much ****s except for touring.
I mean Adele didn't even bother releasing a video for WWWY. It's a miracle we got one for Send My Love.
