You don't have to save anyone, especially if you think your life would be at risk in the situation. Usually saving someone from drowning results in the rescuer becoming the victim in the situation.

Why are people calling those who'd save the dog disgusting? You don't know what kind of relationship a person has with his pet.
I would trade my dog's life for the majority of human's tbh. A dog's love in unconditional. I love my dog as much as I love anyone in my family so a choice between my dog and a child would be incredibly hard, and If i did choose my dog, that definitely doesn't mean I'm disgusting or I hate humans.

I'm pretty sure the question infers that you're a capable swimmer in this situation. It's a question of who you would rather save.

Yes I do. I have had my dog since I was 12 and love him with all my heart, however it is a pet animal, so any human is worth more than it.

Realistically, I'm going for my dog first. We've been ride or die for YEARS. I'm a great swimmer so I know I could get him to the shore really quick and tell them to stay. Then I could go back for the child, and render CPR if necessary.

in germany you have to help someone when they are in danger and you don't get in danger.

in case you couldn't swim or think you weren't able to save them, you wouldn't have to rescue them but you would have to call help.

but in this scenario it's clear that you can 100% rescue someone and in that case you couldn't chose your dog over another human. in my country, at least.
