In 1835 a celebrated french philosopher wrote that "we will never be able to study and analyse by any means the chemical composition or mineralogical composition of stars. Even as this was being written, people were starting to use spectroscopes to to analyse the chemical composition of the sun. What seems out of reach now will be commonplace in future because of PROGRESS
