In terms of the album only, Pray You Catch Me is a slow opener in my opinion, however it is perfect for the movie. Her tone is fantastic however, and the lyrics are so stunning and really evoke raw imagery, especially the my lonely ear pressed against the walls of your world line, which is hitting me harder and harder each time. The building production is great as well as the way it swells towards the end and the desperate plea of 'what are you doing my love? at the very climax of the song.
Hold Up is pure cheekiness. One of my very favourites on the album, the island influence and downplayed production is so ****ing infectious. The video had me with a huge smile on my face, and the contrast of the bouncy synths with lines like 'I'mma **** me up a bitch' and the harsh imagery (that we thought was a stand against police brutality when in reality Jay just has her MAD) is almost comical and yet really strikes a chord that I think we can all relate to. By the time those trap beats came in the bridge with her talking about the back of the car and her making wood I was sold. Definitely could be that summer hit.
Then comes probably one of the best moments of music I've ever heard in Don't Hurt Yourself, with Bey literally screaming and talking so. much. ****. over an alt-rock beat and a Jack White feature. It's so crazy but it's 3:54 of the fire I've needed since Ring The Alarm and it's full of quotable lines. Her vocals are crazy, especially on the 'let it be, let it be, let it be' parts. I do find the feature quite redundant since it's so short but the track has clear White Stripes influence so it makes sense for Jack White to appear. The outro is everything I didn't know I needed and it kind of makes me chuckle that 24 hours ago I considered Resentment and Ring The Alarm as 'raw'. Boy, was I - and all of us - clueless.
Sorry is so punchy and fresh, especially after the preceding song despite having pretty much the same sentiment. Thematically I feel like it's a continuation of Jealous, except this time she really doesn't care about whether she's judged by anyone. Telling her man to 'suck my balls' is hilarious and literally made me laugh out loud. I'm loving how fearless and at times tongue-in-cheek this album is. Sure, it is very serious at times, but at other times it's completely silly and fun. I think that's something self-titled lacked it, quite honestly.
6 Inch to me feels like the alternative R&B equivalent of a gunslinger cowboy showdown. It's so epic, so huge and a song that is dripping in substance. Interesting to note on Genius lyrics that BOOTS left an annotation for that gorgeous bridge saying it is the sequel to Ghost. Way better message about a hard grinding woman than Abel's In The Night. Feels way more like the modern day Dirty Diana and I wouldn't be opposed to it being the lead (though there are several better choices). And those VOCALS at the end. Good lord!
I'm not sure how I feel about Daddy Lessons yet. It's a blues song with elements of country, but it doesn't fit comfortably in any of those genres. The melodies feel to me very modern R&B in places then switch to country but something just seems off. I love the message though, and it's something we don't often see from Bey: her living vicariously through someone else (clearly, her father is not dead, it just sounds epic because it's a country song). I really like the song but I think it will take repeated lessons to really resonate with me. Also, I can;t really relate to the song honestly.
Love Drought is that Future inspired baby-making song that I love, with makeup sex lyrics and Bey cooing with her smooth ass tone. I also love the nine times out of ten.../ten times out of nine contrasting lines. This really sounds amazing on a sound system rather than headphones, as all the little production intricacies jump out way more and it really surrounds you with this plush yet clean soundscape. It's lit.
Sandcastles just ruins me. One of my favourite Bey ballads already. It has an unexpected structure, a range of emotions and vocal delivery. Much more relatable than Heaven on ST and definitely just a gorgeous track. There's little to say about this because the lyrics are straightforward but it really resonates.
I'm not someone who is familiar with James Blake so I don't really maybe understand the hype around Forward when taken out of the film (obviously one of the most impactful parts) but it's a great song and is the point where the album switches from being so desperate, angry, self-pitying and heartbroken into promising and looking to the future. The lyrics are beautiful and the vocal delivery is great. It is basically an interlude after all, though.
Freedom. Good lord. Top 10 in her discography on first listen. Ever since I heard that instrumental in the Formation World Tour trailer I knew this would be a special track. Kendrick's verse is, to be honest, better than his features usually are (not as good as most of his own discog verses but that's understandable) and he is the perfect fit on this track. I love the message, the universal appeal of the song while clearly being about Bey wanting Freedom for her people, the vocals are out of this world and it's honestly just ****ing epic. Lead single material imo, I think radio would eat it up. Just glory.
All Night is so ****ing warm. A beautiful song with incredible lyrics, melodies, vocals. Everything you want from a love song. It feels like those first few summer evenings when life is good and it feels like there are no cares in the world. The bridge is so touching and feels like a victory, a realisation, an enlightenment. And it's testament and demonstrative of Bey's strength as a woman that the status of her relationship is in her control. She's not chosen to forgive her lover because her feelings are overriding her head and he's playing her. She's chosen to do it because she's a woman who understands herself, values herself, and can have full control over her situation. It's almost liberating to forgive someone for such a betrayal, and this song captures that feeling and moment of realisation beautifully. Ahhhh my ****ing fave.
Formation is the Run The World of the album - after 11 vulnerable tracks about her relationship, when you think you know Beyoncé, she banishes you out once again and reminds you that she is completely
untouchable. She's practically goddess-like. Still one of my favourite songs ever released by her. And it's relatable.
Even as a white, gay male, I truly believe that this album is relatable to many people. Bey's music creates feelings, vibes, moments that you project your own struggles and experiences on to and what she said was right - this is healing music. This album is a journey and will heal people the world over for years. Thank you for this Beyoncé. Thank you SO much.
EDIT: And yeah, of course it's her best album. I forgot to add that.

So far, it's much better than the forgettable snoozefest that self-titled was  that album had no replay value at all.

Really weak album. Only a couple of memorable songs (6 Inch & Freedom) and the rest goes from boring songs (Love Drought & Sandcastles) to truly horrible songs (Sorry & Hold Up)

Im fully aware what sampling is thank u! And only 4 songs were in fact sampled... 4 out of 12.
Emancipation of Mimi was heavily sampled yet it only took about 28 people to work on that ENTIRE album and its 15 tracks long, minus the re-release.

It's so overwhelming though, all this new music, all these new visuals, all at once, I can't even properly enjoy each song since another one immediately follows  But everything is just soo good and I'm just in awe.
