I don't think i've ever seen this being done for anyone/thing ,legend .
It was done for both MJ and Whitney in their respective years, as well as for Britney + Gaga for the releases of their highly anticipated singles back in 2011.
Maybe it's because when a figure like Prince contributed a great deal to music and pop culture, sometimes the social issues don't matter that much? I mean, we can all be adults here and don't agree with his political views but it doesn't mean he doesn't deserve respect for his musical genius. That's something that he earned on pure talent and hard work. There's very few artists alive that can even claim that much.
I don't understand why some of you insist on disparaging his character because he didn't agree on gay marriage. That's not a big deal in general since gay marriage is actually legally on the books now; it shouldn't affect the objective view that he was a genuinely a great performer and a gifted musician.
I agree but what I'm saying is that it's a bit surprising that the gay community in partitcular still embraced him after what he said. I don't think you get a pass just because you're a musical genius, hate is hate
