Round 4
Judges' Critiques - C/H/A/N/E/L
SONG 17 - "Autumn Goodbye" by Britney Spears (MusicLoverDude)
This actually made me scream out loud when I heard it. Personally, I despise Britney (even though I kind of like her music), so I cringed having to hear her a little bit, but the song fits the show perfectly well. It very well could've been this playing instead of "Waterfalls" (if it had been set in 1999, not 1995). It's that uber-gay, ultra-fem kitsch that randomly pops out in the show (think "Mad About You" playing in the cafeteria scene) and never fails to entertain.
SONG 18 - "I Got Something" by Frida (VDK)
Definitely a more "serious" approach to the song choice. I enjoy the song (it's probably my second-favorite, just accounting taste, not overall score). Definitely seems inspired by the choice of Frida's "I Know There's Something Going On", but I don't imagine this would play in such a "serious" moment on the show (as if those exist), so it was hard for me to really picture where it would be played, but it definitely fits in among the other songs in the actual ST, so I live.
SONG 19 - "Homewrecker" by Marina & the Diamonds (K$Ellie)
I couldn't tell if this was intentional pandering or not, but it's my personal favorite song on the list (obviously a given since I stan for Marina). Albeit an unpopular opinion, Electra Heart's my favorite album of hers, and it's really hard for me to choose a favorite song on it, so this feels very... that. However, I'm not sure how well it fits in on the soundtrack. It definitely stands out, sonically, and not in an "OMG this was a MOMENT" kind of way. It feels somewhat out of place, but not offensively, so I suppose it can get away with being here.
SONG 20 - "Nothing Left to Lose" by The Pretty Reckless (eteru)
Oh, yikes... I really, really don't like this. Like, I kind of really hate this entire genre. Call that an ignorant blanket statement, but whiney country always makes me want to shoot myself, and that's not what I want from something on Scream Queens. But, I suppose that means this could be playing in the background of a Grace scene, so it's not totally useless (except on the show, the soundtrack and score-- more often the score-- is a very redeeming thing about any time Grace is in front of the camera).
SONG 21 - "Fancy" by Destiny's Child (URBAN)
This song caught me the most off-guard on here, but it was a very pleasant experience. I can already imagine this playing at the end of an episode where the Chanels were just crossed by someone and are plotting their revenge. It's absurdly placed, and totally an odd fit, and yet it fits so well that way. I live, and I really wasn't expecting to here.
SONG 22 - "Too Young to Die" by Lindsay Lohan (Yvess)
Unfortunately, I'd say this is my least favorite overall entry here. I'm well aware that Scream Queens has no shame in dwelling into stupid, cheap humor at times, but this song represents everything I loathe about some early-2000's music-- a cheap pseudo-ballad with poor mixing that some white trash probably listened to when her pants-sagging boyfriend left her. I can't get into it, and I can't imagine this being anywhere on the soundtrack. No ma'am.
SONG 23 - "Come Round Soon" by Sara Bareilles (fiercE)
First of all, I'm actually in love with this song. This is the only song on this list that I hadn't heard before that I would actually like to go on and listen to again in my free time, so extra props for introducing me to it. Pseudo-trip-hop in the verses was great to hear. However, I'm not sure if this fits too well in the soundtrack-- it's not idiotically trite, but it's not stupid serious either. This belongs in a mid-2000's coming-of-age film rather than on Scream Queens which might as well be a cartoon.
SONG 24 - "Kill" by Anouk (Navyofbadgals)
A really odd choice for me. I don't hate it, whatsoever. I actually am interested in it, but like I've said (to a point where it probably sounds repetitive if you're reading these in chronological order), I don't think it fits in on Scream Queens. The song is depressingly dark, and serious, and not done so in a way that it would be hysterical unless it was played at Chad's eventual funeral or something. It could be a cute little end credits track, though, so there's that. It is, however, one of the more sonically pleasing songs here.
