You can't downsize his victory just cause of his beard. There were a lot of factors why Conchita won. He can sing very well and the camera work was also well executed. The same would have worked for Dana International. The beard was always secondary, a nice feature - like the headpiece of Verka Serduchka.

I disagree with this part. Prior to the show it was always "The beard". I'll agree the staging looked great and Conchita's singing was decent. However the beard was more of a "nice feature". IMHO.
This song was done so wrong and I'm low-key still angry about it.

Europe getting it so wrong
The problem was the tragic performance and especially the music which could barely be heard. You could hear the crowd ROAR when Kati Wolf came up in the voting recap, the people in the arena were here for her, don't know what went wrong with the geepee at home!
Last year was so mediocre apart from a few songs. There were 5 songs I genuinely liked and played several times: Russia (my fave of all time), Iceland, Latvia, Montenegro and Slovenia. This year is full of bops.
