Oh I'm so sorry. I saw this the other day but thought someone responded.
The candidates only focus on NYC (well not only but mostly) because most of the voting population is in NYC. If you win NYC by some margin you are about 80% of the way to winning New York (just gotta also do well upstate).
NYC is also the most diverse. For a candidate like Clinton she needs huge margins in all 5 boroughs to offset any upstate prowess Sanders has over her (even though latest polls show they are tied 50 a piece upstate).
It's just like my state (PA). The key to winning is running up a margin in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh while doing relatively okay in the middle of the state (and Harrisburg).
