Im not sure how you judge Kanyes results compared to his previous albums. There's not really any previous release of an artist of his stature to compare it to. I still dont think the sales would be anything special if he'd released it the traditional way like his others.
Plus the competition seems very weak right now. But congrats, I guess.

It's his first album released since the Billboard 200 rule change to include streaming, so yes.

If by traditional you mean before Yeezus, he would certainly boast good numbers. ~100m streams in a week shows his impact is still strong. That's with this album being all over the net in various forms, for now about 2 months. No singles or traditional promotion.
Weak or strong competition, this is the current market and he managed to top the chart unusually while also really honing in the streaming era for albums.
