MJ's death was kinda needed. Young generation had no respect or awareness on his legacy, had he lived another 20-30 years then died, I don't think it would've been as moving to the public since that generation grew up thinking he was a nasty pedophile.
He died while the generation of adults grew up on him and knew him for his music foremost.
Many people under 25 still jam to Thriller, Beat It, Bad and don't feel ashamed, unlike the few gays who still listen to Madonna who have to hide it so they don't get smacked

Madonna is talented and has couple of great albums but she destroyed her legacy and kept on digging until everyone started seeing her as a joke, she still doesn't have any classics and won't be celebrated as the likes of MJ and Bowie when she dies.

I don't think anyone is disputing MJ's public recognition, just pointing out that for a long time and for a large group of people, his public scandals was the primary association. They didn't have the mental timeline of his great musical career that older people did.
Part of the outcry over Whitney and MJ was that they died "young" and were "taken away too soon", and since Madonna is so health obsessed she will be still putting out Hard Candy's into her 90s.
