The fact that Katy hasn't let the critics stop her from doing her thing is admirable. Just goes to show she has strong artistic vision and concrete drive to carry it out.
Most people, fake artists who only care about the bling and not the music (Gaga) would have caved to the critics for giving her bad reviews... Oh wait...she did.
Katy is just being smart and writing songs the public wants to hear until she's a certified legend with enough loyal followers to buy whatever she decides to release. The next Madonna.

Her tone/distintive voice makes the songs good. When she can stuff like Work 7-8 week #1 smashes that are deeply grower songs (or in my case an instant ), that's something to admire.

Surely anyone with a working brain would think Rihanna's singles alone were better than Katy's discography.
Katy showed how much potential she has with Unconditionally.
But the public didn't want it. They wanted the easy songs like Dark Horse. Can you blame Katy for what songs become hits? It's like when Bey release Deja Vu with all its instrumental goodness, but the public wanted pop filler Irreplaceable.
There is no denying Rihanna has a solid discography. It's also pretty diverse. If her lyrics were just a little stronger, I would probably stan for her.
