Random story that just came to mind,
In grade school I told my teacher that I couldn't do the test because my grandmother died (a blunt lie). She said I could do it the next week if I wanted -- no issue. She ended up contacting my parents to ask if everything at home was ok.
When I got home, they told me that they knew. I was mortified. It gets worse, they told me to call my grandmother and tell her what I did, too.
In tears, I called and told her that I used her death to avoid doing a test, etc.
She then told me that I could use her as a death excuse anytime I wanted. To this day, my parents don't know what she told me on the phone.
