MTV has played a big role in making hits or impacting youth culture. You didn't even have to watch a specific show, it was enough when your video was playlisted. Because teenagers and twenty somethings tuned in from time to time, saw your video, bought the music.

That's not the point. Zayn had the fanbase and selling power to debut at #1 on the Hot 100. Where is that power now? 267k people bought Pillowtalk first week. Literally where are they now?

MTV wasn't the huge thing y'all make it to be. It was popular for teens, but it wasn't more bigger than Hot 100.

I'm not seeing your point about the viewers count when TRL literally was a pivotal promo spot for people.

The ability to reinforce popularity 5x a week was amazing and it did determine when people would move onto new singles.

I don't get underplaying MTV's impact in the late 90s and 00s when it was such a force in documentaries, concerts, award shows as well as daily video countdowns.
