that's like saying give a white actor a Native American role because they're a better actor it doesn't make sense.

While sexuality and skin color are both innate characteristics, it is much easier to conceal sexuality than it is one's race.

Gay actors can still have the same opportunities as straight actors, if they conceal their sexuality. Not saying that its right or ok that they should have to do that in order to succeed professionally, but the option is there nonetheless.

Contrast this with race/skin color. It's impossible to hide one's race thus a black actor or actress is immediately placed at a disadvantage and limited by the type of roles they can get.

I guess what I'm saying is it's much more difficult to be a person of color in Hollywood than it is to be someone who's LGBTQ.

Anyway, this was offtopic. To answer the OP's question, it only bothers me when it's a rather shameless transparent attempt at Oscar bait.

To the OP: Not particularly. I mean, the whole point to me, is that they're bringing awareness to topics that no one talks about. Despite the fact that some of these films are like Oscar bait, it's good that at least some hetero actors are willing to step up.

I think this is fine. This is part of the reason why it is accepted for gay actors play straight characters, I think, so overall there are more opportunities for gay actors.

I feel like race and gender are the only two qualities that it's absolutely necessary an actor share with the character they're performing. Everything else is part of acting.

Gay actors do get straight roles tho, but you can make an argument that there haven't been any openly gay actors that have reached that Pitt/Jolie marquee name, tip top of the A-list heights. There's Jodie Foster, I suppose; however, she didn't come out until late in her career.

Two of the best known male comedy roles of the past ten years have been gay actors playing straight characters (Jim Parsons on The Big Bang Theory, Neil Patrick Harris on How I Met Your Mother).

I don't think most of America really knows that Jim Parsons is gay.

Yes & no. I think more straight actors portraying gay characters shows how far mainstream society is progressing in regards to sexuality, because many actors from back in the day wouldn't dare play a gay character.

But on the other hand, I do feel like actual gay actors should be considered for these roles more often being that roles for openly gay actors are already scarce as it is.

But I was under the impression that gay actors don't get the same opportunities as straight actors. I don't see many gay actors playing straight roles except for the ones Achilles listed. But I guess that's on me. I don't watch much tv/films these days.

Matt Bomer is another relatively (and I emphasize "relatively") known gay actor who plays straight roles (primarily White Collar). Or Matt Dallas who played in Kyle XY. There's plenty of them that do, it's that exposure is limited for gay actors.

Though it isn't highly noticed, there are some gay men that play straight characters, for instance: Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper and Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson.
