Bernie's message is all over this campaign. He is not going to be forgotten. If anything, he's foreshadowed the future of the democratic party, hence why Hillary continues to move to the left.
If Clinton doesn't pick Bernie as her VP then she's going to have a hard time to create enthusiasm for her campaign. Going up against Trump in that regards will be difficult. I don't see Trump winning either way, but people are bored by Clinton's campaign. She needs excitement and Bernie has the excitement on his side.
Want you want to see happen doesn't really matter because you have to be smart in your choice. It would benefit Clinton much more to bring Sanders' supporters over to her side and begin adopting a few of his policies. Plus it's the only way I see him ending his campaign earlier at this point.
