Incumbent president Truman was hated for the Korean War and the Red Menace. He lost in New Hampshire's primary to anti-crime-crusader Kefauver so dropped out. Kefauver won most primaries but the party bosses were pissy with him for finding mob connections.
Party bosses wanted Adlai Stevenson who didn't have any glaring flaws, but he didn't really feel like running. He didn't officially enter the race until the national convention, and while behind on the first ballot he eventually won on the third.
