A number of factor. Some college students can't really vote in the primaries near their college since they would be registered in their hometown or whatever. Younger people tend to move around more often and may have to deal with their jobs firstly.
Older people in general are more politically-inclined and stable enough to look at the political situation contrast to the younger who care far less (without Bernie- or Trump for that matter- I know a lot more people my age would be like "meh whatever" to the election), and I know my mother (Hillary's supporter) wouldn't even bother voting in the primary just because of her job's hours.
