in one word: unsettling. After the movie ended and the credits began to roll, the audience just sat there trying to process wtf did we just watch?
The movie begins on a tragedy and the sense of despair just encapsulates the film thereafter. There are some really beautiful nature shots throughout the movie. All the actors was great, especially the child actors. The "big bad" was seen in glimpses and never fully shown, and it worked for the movie. The director chose subtlety which worked for the quiet, unnerving nature of the film. The sense of isolation is real in this film. The production team did their research with the depiction of witchcraft and folklore of that time. The dialogue was the weakest aspect of the film. At times it was hard to understand a phrase within an actor's line due to the accent/speech pattern, and that removed me from the experience of the film but that was the only minor problem.
