You kind of just pointed out the popularity aspect of it, but not all popular artist get them. There has to be some aspect of "quality" (writing, vocals, producers...) in it. This is all most for bragging rights more than anything though lol

PR, the competition and how much you appeal to different types of voters heavily weighs in on your chance to win as well.
For example: 1989 and Teenage Dream and Emotion are nearly identical in many ways, yet Taylor took the trophy home and Katy didn't and Carly didn't even get nominated.
Carly falls under the rader because she lacks popularity. Taylor's public image is much better than Katy's and she can appeal to both pop fans and more conervative voters than Katy(who is by no means risky but her image is more sexualised than Taylor's which is off-putting to some people). On top of the in 2011, when Katy lost, the pop votes were split between Gaga and Katy which gave Arcade Fire, the only rock contender, the chance to get the trophy. This year 1989 was the only pop album nominated and on top of that the voters who favored urban music had to choose between The Weeknd and Kendrick(and even Alabama Shakes in some way) which obviously favors Taylor's chances.
This is by no means the rule and there are exceptions of course but this always has to be kept in mind.

I've been saying this. Also Alabama Shakes/Chris most likely split votes. Taylor's win should have been predictable from this mere fact alone.
