Prince should have won. Bruce has better albums, but BiTUSA is still miles better than ****ing Can't Slow Down. Even Cyndi or Tina were better. I read about how that night was a big WTF moment.

That whole category was competitive. If you look at a lot of the nominated albums of the '80s, many of them are forgotten. That year, it looked like all of that big names in pop at that time. Can't say I'm surprised that Lionel Richie got it. He was HUGE at the time.

Yeah but Prince and Bruce were bigger, those albums DOMINATED the year and made both stars huge cultural phenomenons. 13x Platinum and 15x Platinum respectively vs "only" 10x Platinum for Lionel. They probably ended up splitting votes because both had appeal to the rock crowd.

It definitely makes the albums nominated these days look kind of pathetic though. You'd have to take the biggest albums from several different years together to have a comparable line up in terms of cultural relevance, iconic hits and superstar artists.

Prince and Bruce have great catalog sales. "Can't Slow Down" had a terrible shelf-life, but "Hello" and "All Night Long" were huge on the charts and in pop culture. Plus, he was the safest choice of them all. I could buy a vote-split, though. Prince, Bruce, Tina and even Cyndi pulled from a huge pop and rock bracket with Prince and Tina getting R&B support. Lionel probably got a mixture of pop, gospel, R&B and more adult contemporary votes.
