There's plenty of proof that Bernie has marched numerous times for civil rights, so I don't know why Lewis is trying to negate that. He's ignoring a negative of Hillary to dismiss a positive of Bernie In the end Hillary has been a Democrat for the majority of life so it really doesn't matter, but still.
And that's not transparent; it's called turning your attention to another state and demographic Al Sharpton has virtually no influence in Iowa/NH.

Lewis was merely pushing back at the notion of some Sanders supporters that Uncle Bernie was some great civil rights leader. And that's absolutely fair. How is it that Sanders has been in Congress for 30 years and has no significant relationships with any black leaders? Being in the vicinity of MLK (like many others that day, including Mitch McConnell) means very little.
I'll say this about Bernie, he himself isn't pushing this fiction. But it's prevalent enough in social media that I'm glad Lewis shot it down. The amount of fake photos with random white dudes during the 60s CRM movement circulating are staggering. Not before long we'll be seeing that Sanders fought with the North in the Civil War.
And it absolutely is transparent, because it shows that he didn't care to speak to black voters until he needed their votes. Not that Sharpton has any real influence but he was MIA from these photo ops with prominent black political figures before (and no, Killer Mike is not a prominent black political figure).
