It's kinda embarrassing that critics (or, well, at least AcclaimedMusic) think 1989 is Her best album. Like, no offense, but are they simple? It's easily Her worst minus the mixtape. Fearless and Speak Now are much better albums, as is Red. Not sure why no one ever calls out the filler on 19KT9. Maybe it is because it is the best bunch of singles She has ever had? Not sure.

1989 just happened to come out at a time where general critical reception on her music was evolving into something more favorable. The way Taylor framed the album as a transitional effort also helped.

Critic by critic, 1989 was regarded just as well as Red.
