Bernie has already said if he loses, he will stump for Hillary and tell his supporters to vote for her. Bernie supporters will not sit out the general. People said the same about Hillary supporters sitting out from Obama and that ended up untrue. Hillarys main challenge is not with the Democrats, it will be winning independents. Independents are strongly leaning toward either Bernie or Trump. She polls low with indepedents and they are the group that usually are the deciding factor in elections. Usually, independents are males and they lean Republican so that will be something she needs to work at. Her male VP choice has to be very strategic in this regard. It should be a Southerner to diffuse the Republicans a bit.

She is not going to win over the independents. They've made a point that they have hated the Clinton's from the get go - even moreso since she is a woman (because let's face it, a wide amount of independents are Republican-lite white males). She needs to focus on minorities and supporting the democratic base.
