you don't separate the campaign and the visuals from the music...they go hand in hand

how many times have you listened or watched something without any prior knowledge but once you gained the background info, your perception changed???

the reason for all of the stuff last year was to promote the album
Rihanna dragged the campaign for a year so its inevitable

and besides...to the user i originally quoted...these 40 year old men had no problem giving FKA Twigs and Tinashe great scores

Thats what the so called "reviewers" do nowadays, they review the persons life and the music becomes just a small focus. Most of the reviews for Unapologetic where talking her and Chris Brown if i remember correctly

Im not surprised critics don't understand the album. This is Rihanna's first album where she has pretty much done everything her way, this is Rihanna like we've never heard her before and alot of people are confused because its not the pop/hook-heavy Rihanna everyone is used to therefore the casual listener/critic won't be as receptive to it.
Truth is you really have to love Rihanna and all of her sounds to appreciate this album.

I'm not a huge fan of the album (it's not terrible, it's just doesn't stand out to me) but around a 60 average score so far?

It at least deserves around a 70 if not 75.

Yeah I thought she might have landed mid 70s with this but now IDK -- the way Rih is perceived is dragging scores even lower than what the typical "female pop star" tax usually shaves off the top.

The problem with rihanna and the critics is that they don't see her as a musician, they see 8 writers and producers for just one song. They can't talk about a growing mature artist, a change of direction, artistry, because she is not the creator of those songs. critics love self made artists.

Which doesn't make any sense because the critics trash her pop material all the time. You would think they would appreciate her experimenting and going out of the box.

I forgot who it was but in one of the reviews for Unapologetic, they said that she basically did the same sounds from Talk That Talk.

I'm confused.

This just proves that reviews are practically irrelevant. Rihanna just served the best album of 2014/2015 and 2016 so far. Uneducated hoes better stay pressed.

That's why Unapologetic received such a low score because the whole time they focused on her adding CB to the album.
