Africans wouldn't have had to. We had and still have the continent most rich in natural resources and wealth. The reason Europeans colonized was a means to tap into the wealth of other comtinents. Ancient african economies were the most stable and before slavery, trade between Africans, Asians and Europeans most benefited African kingdoms because of the natural resources we exported.
Have you heard about the black African king Manas Musa of Mali who was believed to be the wealthiest man on earth when observed by Asain and European travelers. The reason the coasts of Ghana and Ivory coast were given such names was because of the sheer abundance of things like Ivory and gold that the royalty adorned.
