The only reason America is "late" is because we have such a huge music industry in our own country, the largest in the world.
So ofcourse naturally, radio, the population, and the industry will focus on new hits in the country first and foremost and songs that are becoming hits around the world will get focus later.
Compare it to a countries like New Zealand, Poland, Norway or something where there's barely any popular artists that are native, so the radios and population is naturally looking for songs blowing up in other countries.
