Well, if the five nominated white actors (in each category) were simply the best, then what's the problem? Or would you prefer a black actor to snatch a nomination even if he didn't deserve it and someone more deserving was snubbed because of it? I don't know why some people always play the race cards and make racism out of everything.

Do you think minorities like being victims? What a statement

The probably is that not enough black actors and actresses are getting Oscar roles. How are we suppose to get nominated when we aren't getting those roles.

That's what I'm saying people calling out the Oscars ain't right, the big problem is the industry and the lack of main/important roles for minorities. The ones nominated are(for the most part) the same ones that got nominated for other award shows and Critic's EOY lists. As a minority myself and a fellow Mexican I'm happy Inarritu was nominated for his work on The Revenant but I wont complain about the Oscars when its the directors, studios, etc etc that don't give opportunities to minorities. Google latinos nominated for Oscars and we really never get no love because there not a lot that get big opportunities. I think the last Mexican actress that was nominated was Salma hayek in ****ing 2003 and she lost

Focus was not well received. The other two you are right about.

but were the performances necessarily stronger? that is up to debate. I don't think it is right, but it isn't a simple argument of discriminatory nominations.

Not really, it's true. Only two actors had some buzz this year, Will Smith and SLJ, but both of their performances were just ok and they deservedly didn't get a nod.
Now the actresses from Tangerine, they deserve it, but that kind of movie almost never make it to the big awards. Not becuase of race, but because it's too indie
|
Idris (Sag, GG, Bafta) had more buzz than both Will and SLJ who wasn't nominated for a single major award.
Again, I haven't seen any of their performances but why is everyone forgetting him and focusing on Will?

What did you expect them to do, have quotas? The fault is not with the Oscars but in casting.

I'm black and I'm blaming the industry. Typically the only time a black person is nominated is when they do those slave period pieces. And while the performances are great and deserve merit, why are we limited to that? Why can't Black, Mexican, Asian, and etc. get roles like white actors get nominated typically for?

The constant disregard of the efforts of minority actors by the mainstream award shows feeds in to the idea that we are less than our acting peers. That only discourages actors and stifles minority creativity.

Noone but MBJ and Idris Elba deserved nominations, the former's movie came really late into the conversation and the latter's movie was on Netflix so it is perfectly understandable why they were snubbed, but go on keep claiming Oscars are racist, not studios.

Tho if I'm wrong, I'm happy to have someone correct me
Honestly, these protests just hurt causes. Did the Oscars nominate any LGBT, Asian, Latina, etc. people last year and this year? Anyone with any kind of mental disorder? Any children? (I haven't checked, so again, correct me if in wrong) No? Wow! They must hate all LGBT, Asian, Latina people, all people with mental disorders, and all children. Or maybe no one in said groups was Oscar worthy this year. It happens
You could argue Hollywood's racist casting people discriminated and took their chances away, but that's still not the Oscar's fault (tho it's very possibly true)

Great post. I agree with you 100%.

Thinking about it now I do think it has more to do with the lack of roles for minorities in general, similar to what Viola Davis said you can't be nominated for roles that are not there. Let's not forget the Oscars nominated Quvenzhane while most awards snubbed her.

But they're right... Academy doesn't discriminate in my honest opinion, the problem is disproportional amount of roles given to white people compared to POCs. That's the real issue. For example, if 80 percent of all movies considered for these kinds of awards are all done by and starring white men and only 20% are diverse (black/latino/asian), these kinds of results are not to be unexpected.
More opportunities for POC = Better chances of them getting nominated. The issue is in the casting and that needs to be addressed firmly.

This is the issue, not the Academy, but people will be people and complain just for the sake of complaining. I would love for black actors to win awards for movies that aren't just about racism. I hope in the future black/latino/asian people get cast a lot more. But this year wasn't too fruitful.
|
Hollywood casting is 100% unquestionably racist and needs changing (writers aren't too much better) I think the lack of racial diversity in noms can be more credited to that as well.

Can we stop with calling everything racist just because people of a different color weren't nominated. Maybe they didn't do anything to be nominated. Should they nominate a black person solely on their race so there's no bad press or for their talent?

And wait, the Idris movie was direct to Netflix? They're not allowed to nominate him according to their own rules (they have to play in theaters, THEY CANNOT do noms for DTV or DTNetflix)
