It is not that it isn't a good thing. It is just that most people do not know album sales figures. We know because we are musicheads but the public generally just know the signature songs. I'm sure they don't know which song is #1 or #2 or how much they sold either or what song was #1 this week back in 1993 either.
If the album is legendary enough (Thriller, 21, Illmatic, etc.), those albums will be remembered and mentioned by people, regardless if they know whether or not x sold 21 million copies or just 1 million. It's a futile argument, tbh.
