There are different metrics and parameters . A song that is a hit on radio won't necessarily be a hit in sales. A song that is a hit on spotify won't necessarily be a hit Youtube and vice versa.

You are thinking too much like an American. Shut Up And Dance and Earned It were very moderate hits outside the Anglosphere. And most of the success they did achieve outside the Anglosphere was because people there use the global Spotify charts to discover music. They weren't actually on the radio much and didn't have much of a presence in those countries. That's better measured by YouTube.

Because there isn't one way to objectify it, as a matter of fact, there's no way at all. If a flop song has more streams on Spotify than a hit song, it means it was more played on Spotify. If a flop song's music video has more views than a hit song's video, guess what? It means the flop song's video was watched more times than the hit song's video.

Like someone also said there's a Prince Royce song with nearly as much views as Bad Romance. Yes, he could very huge in Latin America.

But speaking on a global level, does Prince Royce's song come close to Bad Romance? Like if we surveyed North America, South America, Asia, Africa, and etc would they have even a remotely similar amount of popularity.

The music video for Love Yourself is terrible. He's never going to get that #1 with it unless he releases an amazing music video to get that additional push.
